"… he (Jinnah) spent much of his life fighting for a kind of Islam which shows respect for law, for the rights of women and the minorities -- things with the Prophet Muhammed himself insisted upon." Quote from the Independent (London)

The drama of the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan in 1947 was dominated by larger-than-life figures like Lord Mountbatten, Mahatma Ghandi, Pandit Nehru, and Mr. Jinnah, the Quaid-I-Azam (the Great Leader). The Quaid's achievement was the creation, almost single-handedly, of the largest Muslim nation in the world, Pakistan. As its Governor-General, he became the first Asian head of state in modern history, yet he is the least known among the giants of his time.

This documentary explores his remarkable life intertwined with the formulation of Pakistan itself. It is an intimate portrait that features first published interviews with Jinnah's daughter, Dina, and his private secretary.

Dr. Akbar Ahmed is the founder and producer of the Jinnah quartet, a series of four outstanding productions including this documentary, a feature film, a book, and a graphic novel. He is currently Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies and Professor of International Relations at American University.

Single DVD. Region 1 (North American system) format.
