Muslims shouldn’t just live in their neighborhoods, but actively participate. Whatever the cause, whether it be a town council, a neighborhood watch, or just a friendly get together, Muslims should build bridges of understanding by getting involved with fellow members of their community. Sometimes itís difficult to break the ice with people who donít seem to have a lot in common with you, but this is one of our jobs as Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made no distinction between Muslims and non-Muslims when he was instructed to uphold the rights of neighbors.

Safa Zarzour is the principal of Universal School in Bridgeview, Illinois, the president of CAIR's Chicago branch, and an elected official in the Bridgeview city council.

The lecture is followed by a discussion led by Abdul Malik Mujahid with Safa Zarzour, Hannah El-Amin, and Dawud Wharnsby Ali. Building bridges of understanding in our neighborhoods will not only make the neighborhood better, but will insha-Allah be rewarding on the Day of Judgement as well.
